Sonia Berrih-Aknin obtained her Doctor of Science degree in Immunology in 1984 from the University “Pierre et Marie Curie” in Paris, under the supervision of Professor Jean-François Bach, who introduced her into the world of immunology and autoimmunity. She got a permanent position at the INSERM (French Institute of Health and Medical Research). Sonia Berrih-Aknin has been the coordinator of four European projects, including together more than 30 European groups. Currently, she leads a team on the etiological, pathological and regulatory mechanisms of Myasthenia Gravis, in La Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital, at the Institute of Myology, in close collaboration with the center of reference on neuromuscular disorders.
Her research interest focuses on the pathogenic mechanisms of Myasthenia Gravis. She investigated the molecular and cellular components involved in the autoimmune anti-acetylcholine receptor response. She discovered a severe defect of the immunoregulatory mechanisms in the patients. She developed a new preclinical model of MG and a novel therapeutical approach. Altogether she published about 200 pee-reviews articles.
