He founded the Society for Neuroimmunology in 1987 and served as President until 2001. He was founding Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Neuroimmunology from 1981 to 2010. His many honors include an Award for Meritorious Contributions to Neuropathology from the American Association of Neuropathologists, a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Consortium of Multiple Sclerosis Centers, a Research Career Development Award from NIH, a Javits Award from the NIH, and the Dystel Prize from the National MS Society and the American Academy of Neurology. Dr. Raine received a PhD (Medicine) in 1967, a DSc (Medicine) in 1975 both from Newcastle University, England, was made a fellow of the Royal College of Pathology in 1988, and received a Doctoris Honoris Causa from Lodz, Poland in 2000. He maintains an office at Einstein where he continues his writing.
