Soyon Hong heads a lab at the UK Dementia Research Institute in University College London, UK.  Her lab studies how glial and immune cells talk to each other to determine synaptic fate in health and neurodegeneration. To that end, the lab recently discovered a role for perivascular cells in influencing microglia-synapse phagocytosis in models of Alzheimer’s disease. Soyon received her PhD in Neuroscience at Harvard after training with Dennis Selkoe on synapse degeneration in amyloidosis, and completed her post-doctoral training with Beth Stevens, where they identified microglia as synaptic saboteurs in disease. Soyon started her independent lab in Fall 2018.
