Dr. Luciana Berod studied Biochemistry with a focus on Molecular Immunology and Microbiology at the University of Buenos Aires in Argentina. She moved later to Germany, where she obtained her PhD in Immunology from the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena. She worked as a research group leader at TWINCORE in Hannover, a joint venture between the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research (HZI) and the Hannover Medical School (MHH). Dr. Berod´s work gained international acclaim for her discoveries on how immune cell metabolism influences the immune response. She demonstrated that the development of Th17 cells depends on de novo fatty acid synthesis (FAS), and that this pathway has therapeutic potential in autoimmune diseases and GvHD. In addition, she showed that activation of the FAS pathway in T cells has also implications during infection in which excessive protective immune responses can lead to unwanted tissue destruction. Recently, she published new studies on how fatty acid metabolism influences other immune cell subsets such as Tregs or Dendritic Cells. Dr. Berod has been recently appointed as Professor for Immunomodulation at the Medical University of Mainz, where she continues her studies with the focus “Immunometabolism and immunotherapy of infectious and autoimmune diseases”.
