Dr. Isaac Chiu is an assistant professor at Harvard Medical School in the Department of Immunology. Dr. Chiu’s research focuses on interactions between the nervous system, microbes, and the immune system at barrier tissues including the skin, lungs, and gastrointestinal tract. He has found that nociceptive sensory neurons sense bacteria and communicate directly with innate immune cells to modulate their phenotypes during inflammation. Understanding peripheral neuronal interactions with immune cells could lead to novel approaches to treat pain, neurodegeneration and inflammation. Dr. Chiu received his PhD in Immunology from Harvard Medical School and postdoctoral training in the neurobiology of pain. Dr. Chiu has received the NIH Director’s New Innovator Award, Burroughs Wellcome Fund Investigators in the Pathogenesis of Disease Award, and the Chan-Zuckerberg Initiative Ben Barres Early Career Acceleration Award.
