Dr. Goverman received a BA in Chemistry from Brandeis University and a Ph.D. in Biological Chemistry from UCLA. Her postdoctoral fellowship at UCLA was followed by additional training at the California Institute of Technology. Dr. Goverman joined the faculty in the School of Medicine at the University of Washington in 1992 as an Assistant Professor, and was appointed Chair of the Department of Immunology in 2010. Dr. Goverman’s research focuses on developing new animal models of multiple sclerosis to define the pathogenic mechanisms underlying this disease and identify potential points of therapeutic intervention. In particular, her research has revealed how interactions between myelin protein-specific CD4+ and CD8+ T lymphocytes influence the manifestation of central nervous system autoimmunity. She received the Harry Weaver Neuroscience Junior Faculty Award in 1995 and has published 71 articles. Dr. Goverman currently is the recipient of an NIH Merit Award, and is a member of the NIH Clinical Neuroimmunology and Brain Tumors Study Section and the Research Programs Advisory Committee for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
