The role of the gut and its microbiome in the etiology of various diseases is recently being appreciated. A growing body of evidence suggests that the gut with its large surface, which provides the platform for interaction between the gut associated lymphatic tissue, the diet, the microbiota, and its metabolites may also be associated with neurologic and neuroimmunological and neurodegenerative  disorders, such as Parkinson’s and MS. At our center, we have set out to investigate the role of fatty acids. In a recent translational study, we investigated, whether the protective effect of the short chain fatty acid propionic acid may have a therapeutic effect also in MS patients.
